Castilla y Leon is considered to be the biggest region in Spain as well as the entire European Union. It is composed of the provinces of Leon, Palencia, Segovia, Salamanca, Zamora, Valladolid, Burgos, Avila and Soria. This particular region of Spain is bordered by several mountain ranges; the Sistema Iberico in the east, the Cordillera Cantabrica in the north and the Cordillera Central in the south. In the north it is bordered by the Duero River that heads towards Portugal.

History

Castilla y Leon was formed after the regions of Leon and Castilla la Vieja were joined together in 1983. Both of these regions are historically important. They have plenty of well-preserved historical structures that have existed since the medieval ages such as churches, monasteries, castles, fortresses and cathedrals.

Tourist Attractions

Aside from the ancient historical structures, Castilla y Leon is also known for its other tourist attractions such as its nature parks and forests. It is not only the historical buildings that are well preserved in Castilla y Leon; the forests in the region are also well-preserved. There you will find a wide expanse of virgin forests filled with oaks and other trees. The cuisine of the region is also another reason why tourists visit. Dishes such as the creamy beans of Avila are just one of the many dishes that the region is known for. The region is abundant in fresh meats as well as vegetables that make the local cuisine even more delicious.

The Province of Segovia

The province of Segovia in Castilla y Leon is frequented by tourists who wish to catch a glimpse of the ancient aqueduct. This gigantic ancient structure that comprises a huge part of the town has existed since the Roman era. Tourists also visit the famous Alcazar as well as the Gothic cathedral in Segovia.

The Province of Salamanca

The province of Salamanca is an important part of Spanish history mainly because it is where the University stands. The University is the oldest one in the entire Europe and is also famous for its historical and cultural importance as well as the beauty of the structure itself.

The Province of Leon

Leon was recognized as the capital of the Kingdom of Leon in the past. Now, it is famous for its historic monuments such as the Basilica de San Isidoro also visit villa huren spanje, an ancient cathedral filled with Romanesque frescoes. Another famous monument in Leon is the church of San Marcos which was built during the Renaissance era.
